Enable Planner and set permissions

Planner is a project module with two permissions. You need the Administrator role or the permission to manage roles and project settings.

Enable the module in a project

  1. Open the project and select Settings, then Modules.
  2. Select the Planner check box and select Save.
  3. The Planner tab appears in the project menu, next to Gantt.

The global Planner page (top menu) does not need a module: it opens for users who have View planner in at least one project and shows the issues they can see.

Give permissions to roles

  1. Select Administration, then Roles and permissions, then a role.
  2. In the Planner group select the permissions below.
  3. Select Save.
Permission What it allows
View planner Open the Planner tab and the global page, open Review changes for reading.
Edit planner draft Change the Draft: drag, resize, create dates, edit dialog, dependencies, Discard, Apply. In the PRO build also save, rename and delete baselines.

What Apply additionally needs

Planner never bypasses Redmine permissions. To Apply a change the user also needs the core permission of that change, checked again for every row at the moment of Apply:

  • Edit issues for changes of dates, estimates and assignees of the issue,
  • Manage issue relations for added and removed dependencies.

A row the user may not apply is shown disabled with the text "You cannot apply this change". Planners who only propose changes can therefore work next to managers who apply them.

Who sees what

  • Issues and projects follow the usual visibility of Redmine. Hidden issues never appear on the chart or in the Review table.
  • The Draft belongs to the issue, not to a user or a project page: everybody with Edit planner draft in the issue's project edits the same proposal, and the last change per issue wins. The Draft article explains the consequences.
  • Roles are checked in the project of each issue, so a subproject can have other roles than its parent.
